Navigating the internet is an integral part of our daily lives. Yet, many of us aren’t aware of the complex system that operates quietly behind the scenes, making our smooth browsing experience possible. This system is known as the Domain Name System, or DNS for short. Think of it as the directory of the internet, a critical service without which, you wouldn’t be able to find any websites.

The Basics of DNS

Let’s start with the basics. Every device connected to the internet, from a server to your smartphone, is assigned a unique IP address. This IP address is a series of numbers, such as 192.168.1.1, and it’s what computers use to find each other and communicate on the internet. However, IP addresses aren’t exactly user-friendly or easy to remember for most people. Here’s where the DNS comes into play.

DNS translates these numerical IP addresses into human-readable domain names, like “www.google.com”. Whenever you type a web address into your browser, the DNS system is responsible for finding the correct IP address for that site and directing your browser to it.

How Does the DNS Process Work?

Imagine you want to visit “www.example.com”. You type it into your browser and hit enter. What happens next is a rapid and complex exchange that allows you to see the website. Here’s a step-by-step breakdown:
