This system is known as the Domain Name System, or DNS for short. Think of it as the directory of the internet, a critical service without which, you wouldn’t be able to find any websites.
The Basics of DNS
Let’s start with the basics. Every device connected to the internet, from a server to your smartphone, is assigned a unique IP address. This IP address is a series of numbers, such as 192.168.1.1, and it’s what computers use to find each other and communicate on the internet. However, IP addresses aren’t exactly user-friendly or easy to remember for most people. Here’s where the DNS comes into play.
DNS translates these numerical IP addresses into human-readable domain names, like “www.google.com”. Whenever you type a web address into your browser, the DNS system is responsible for finding the correct IP address for that site and directing your browser to it.
